CIRRUS SR22-G3 GTS Specifications, Cabin Dimensions, Performance

We grabbed an Uber from the airport, checked into our hotel and then headed back out for dinner. After first confirming I was cool with raw fish, Ivy suggested Pisco y Nazca, a nearby Peruvian ceviche gastrobar. The ceviche was the best I’ve had, but the revelation for me was the crunchy corn kernels bathed in a light sauce, a perfect compromise between popcorn and nuts. Another issue was the inability to access the CAPS system when the chute needed to be repacked.

Cirrus SR22-G3 GTS Description

We had a pilot report both from my own flight earlier that day and various confirmations of icing from the commercial aircraft making the approach from the south into Knoxville. Fortunately for our mission, our mount had the TKS deicing/anti-icing system installed, providing for flight into known icing. Combined with a high ceiling and surface temps above freezing, having a FIKI-approved airplane meant we could go rather than wait.

As of January 2022, the SR series has sold over 8,000 units, with no signs of sales slowing down. The composites used in the body of the SR22 are not only lighter than conventional materials. But it is also significantly stronger according to the crash tests conducted by Cirrus.

The Cirrus SR22 G6 we flew for ourreport was a loaded 2017 model with the new Perspective+ by Garmin avionics suite with new keypad with QWERTY layout, autopilot controller, numerical array layout and more. Like all Cirrus aircraft, the SR22 G6 is equipped with a whole airplane parachute recovery system (Cirrus Airframe Parachute System, or CAPS). Aircraft insurance can be divided into liability coverage and hull coverage.

The G5 had a lot of improvements over the G3 and introduced new features. Insurance companies define an experienced pilot as an individual who has at least an instrument-rated private pilot with a total of 750 hours and at least 50 hours on type. The payout is mainly used to repair the aircraft, but in cases where the aircraft is totaled, the insurer will pay the policyholder the amount the aircraft was insured for.

Like the SR20, the SR22 utilizes a side-stick control yoke, which despite its look, is surprisingly easy to use. To rotate, all you need to do is press your arm into the armrest and the airplane sprints away from the runway. Even at slow speeds, you have plenty of authority in the ailerons to keep the airplane from falling off on a wing. A coolie hat-type switch on the top of the side stick handles aileron and elevator trim. The switch engages small motors that drive spring cartridges attached to the control surfaces.

The devices make the Cirrus airplanes docile in stalls and virtually impossible to spin. Cirrus test flights show that both airplanes behave conventionally in spins, but, like most high-performance airplanes, neither is approved for the maneuver. However, it comes with additional maintenance expenses and a slight payload reduction due to added weight. The Cirrus Advantage package elevates the Cirrus Perspective+ flight deck with a larger 12-inch screen size.

Cirrus SR22 Guide and Specs: A Ci-rious Aircraft

When the turbo model, the SR22T, came on the scene in 2010, it boosted the SR22′s sales, which had dropped by 60 percent following the economic recession in 2008. Cirrus Aircraft has updated its single-engined SR-series light aircraft, rolling out new cabin options and aerodynamic changes that improve efficiency and boost speed. The 80-knot rotation speed comes quickly and if you’re holding some back pressure to keep the weight off the castering nose wheel, the airplane effortlessly jumps off the runway. Through 90 knots it’s flaps up (from the 50 percent takeoff position) and establish a 120-knot cruise climb.

Exploring the Performance and Handling of the Cirrus SR22

The training system in our flight school is aimed at obtaining the required knowledge in the shortest possible time. Pilots training is carried out on flight and navigation simulators and modern aviation equipment. Ever since its introduction in 2001, the Cirrus SR22 has experienced exceptional triumph in the aviation realm. In a mere two years, it soared to become the best-selling general aviation aircraft, a remarkable achievement that it has continuously upheld.

Aileron response has been a hallmark of the SR series from the beginning—pushrods make for immediate gratification when you input a roll command. And I noticed that the ergonomics of the yoke have improved significantly since early days. Improvements in composite manufacturing have shaved off pounds from the empty weight of the SR20 and SR22 along the way. The glass-panel generation began in 2003, with the Avidyne Entegra suite in the SR22 G1—and transitioned pilots to the concept of a large-scale primary flight display.

In 2010, Cirrus introduced the SR22 Turbo, featuring a ground-boosted turbocharger. With a Continental TSIO-550-K engine producing 315 hp, the SR22T offered five more horsepower than the standard version. This turbo-normalized variant allowed the SR22 to reach altitudes up to 25,000 ft. By incorporating a Tornado Alley Turbo, the aircraft maintained sea-level pressure throughout its flight envelope, offering improved engine performance without the drawbacks of conventional turbocharging.

Climbing back to 7,500 feet and leveling off, I pushed up the power for a couple of speed runs. So, unless you are literally in an air race and willing to suck down twice as much gas, it’s not worth it to go beyond 85 percent. Power management is easy for maneuvering (50 percent power to capture VO), descent and approach (25 to 35 percent power), and pattern work (about 30 percent power). I changed course after that first visit to Cirrus, pursuing a track in aviation journalism instead of a sole focus on flight training. To save some space, Cirrus designed a more compact and modern ignition system that’s fired via redundant electronic circuits. You can now pull that handle at 140 knots, increased from an old 133-knot deployment speed.

Cirrus has delivered seven SR22s and expects that about a third of the 650 aircraft in its backlog will end up as SR22s. The SR22 does both and in a level of comfort seldom seen in general aviation. We’re dedicated to a world-class experience throughout the lifetime of aircraft ownership with service and support to help you maintain your aircraft. Released in 2017, the fifth generation of the SR22 introduced the Cirrus Perspective + avionics system.
